Julia and James: Engaged
[intro]We took some time to photograph this cute couple’s super fun engagement session. They are SO in love! Being able to hear their story was such a joy, here it is for you to enjoy as well.[/intro]She Says:
How did you guys meet?
We first met interviewing for a humanitarian trip to India. James was leading an expedition of college students to travel to India to teach orphans English when I met him. I walked into the interview room and though there were three people in the room, I only had eyes for James and his bowtie, boat socks, and plaid pants.
First thoughts about one another after you met?
I thought I blew my interview because I commented on his outfit before even seeing the two other people in the room!
Who said “I love you” first?
James!
Tell us about your first date:
This is interesting, we had many first “not dates” because we were not allowed to “date” within our group of college students in the program. So, we went on “not dates,” where we would go to Saturday’s Waffle and invite people but go to this breakfast truck at 8:00 am on a saturday morning, knowing that no college student would take us up on this. We would then just hang out for a little bit, but never kiss or acknowledge that we liked each other! Our first “real date” (after we had finally acknowledged the fact that we liked each other and I texted him wondering if he was ever going to ask me on a date..) we went to dinner at Takashi (the best sushi in Salt Lake) and after dinner we went to the Grand America hotel and walked around the halls, went to random floors, and admired the beauty and architecture of the hotel (after stopping at the little sweet shop to get a treat). It was so fun I never wanted the date to end!
Tell us about your first kiss:
After the Grand America on our first date, we went back to James’s house and watched a movie. When we said goodbye that night, we were standing on his porch and we hugged and then it was only natural and overdue, we kissed. It was the most amazing kiss I have ever kissed, and I’m pretty sure there were fireworks just like in the movies. After about 4 seconds I stopped to make sure it was that amazing for him too (it was).
How did you know he/she was the one?
Well, the perfect kiss was one sign. I knew when I fully realized that it didn’t matter to me what we did, we could be walking around REI and just knowing that it didn’t get any better than that moment, just being with James was my favorite activity. He is such an adventure! I loved watching him be a leader in India, and knew that I could not stop this amazing adventure called James!
How did he propose?
It was amazing! There is a video of the whole thing, but James ordered an old school red viewfinder-slides thing that you had when you were a kid where you look into it like binoculars and there is a picture and you can switch between pictures. So he had one custom made with pictures of us and words on them such as “I always knew you were the one” and “you stole my heart” and the last slide said “So Julia, will you marry me?” and I took the viewfinder off my eyes and he was on one knee! I was obviously sobbing through the entire thing and it was the best night of my life!

How did you guys meet?
I met Julia when I was interviewing her to join a group of college students who were going to Northern India to teach educational workshop to orphans and kids in rural schools. After the interview my mom who also was interviewing Julia came up to me and said, ” you need to date her” and I said “I know!”
Who said “I love you” first?
I would always try to get Julia to tell me she loved me by saying ” well I know you like me but.. do you more than like me? ” and that never worked for me she would just laugh at me. So I ended up saying I love you first and she said she loved me…. several weeks later.
Tell us about your first date:
We technically were no supposed to date when we first started hanging because it was a policy that the organization we were going to indian with Youth Making A Difference had; so we would go on a thing called “Not dates” where we would plan to go get Saturday’s Waffle every Saturday and would invite people but then make it crazy early in the morning so no one would actually come with us. Our first real date was a couple months later when we could finally date. We when to Takashi Sushi, then walked around and hung out in the Grand America Hotel and pretend to be rich, after that we went back to my house and that’s when we had our first kiss.
Tell us about your first kiss:
Because we weren’t allowed to date for the first couple months our physical contact was limited and you could say certain “tension” were high! We came close to kissing a couple times but didn’t. Once we got the “ok” we went on an official date and kissed. When we kissed it was like time stopped and there was a 360 degree panoramic view of us kissing and all of the pinned up feelings and emotions came out in the worlds greatest first kiss!
I knew she was the one when I first met her in that interview, it was like “oh duh, of course she is the one I have been waiting for” and that thought came to be prophetic.
