Ali & Tanner: Engaged!
[intro]Ali and Tanner are so cute and took the time to fill out this “She Says” vs. “He Says” love story questionnaire. We already know they’re a perfect match as a couple, now check out their answers to see if they match up as well:[/intro]
She Says:
How we met:
It was July 3rd and my roommate, Jess, and I were going to go buy fireworks for a fourth of July party we were throwing the next day. On our way to the parking lot we passed a guy’s apartment where a couple guys were just sitting around the tv in their living room. Jess then decided that they also needed to come buy fireworks with us and starting flailing her arms in front of their window. I thought she was ridiculous! Who just invites a couple of random guys to go buy fireworks at 10 o’clock at night?! Well they ended up opening their window and agreed to come. Tanner was one of those guys. Our two apartments became close friends and now I’m marrying Tanner! Serendipity at its finest.
First Thoughts:
I thought Tanner was a stud! He was the most handsome guy in the apartment complex and a total sweetheart. I was used to guys asking me out or at least making some sort of move pretty quickly if they were interested in me but Tanner didn’t. It drove me crazy! I had no idea he was even remotely interested for a while.
Who said “I love you” first?:
Tanner did and I totally saw it coming! It was so darling to see his internal struggle about whether or not to say it. But he finally did and I knew that he meant it so I said it right back.
First Date:
The first date he asked me on or our actual first date? haha He asked me out on a Sunday to go to a Salt Lake Bees baseball game that following Friday. I excitedly agreed. But, as the week progressed we were basically acting like a couple, so that Wednesday afternoon he randomly asked me on a date to the batting cages. He got to show off his baseball skills for awhile and then we got dinner at Cafe Rio. We officially started dating that night.
First Kiss:
It was a Monday night and my apartment ran out of toilet paper so what do I do?? I call up the guy I’m crushing on and ask him to take me to Smiths! I know, super romantic, but Tanner agreed to go to Smiths with me. We went to Smiths and then came back to the apartment complex. We sat in the car for awhile while I showed Tanner Jason Mraz’s new album and “Love Someone” (my favorite and the most romantic song of the album) came on. I was singing along and I could feel Tanner just looking at me. Towards the end of the song I looked back at him and smiled. He then proceeded to kiss me during the most perfect part of the song. It was the greatest.
How did I know he was the one:
We were at my friends wedding reception and there was a live band and a dance floor. As soon as we walked in I told Tanner that we needed to dance because I honestly love dancing, especially at weddings. He kind of just laughed and did not seem very excited about that idea. I took that as a sign that we probably wouldn’t be doing any dancing that night and I was fine with it because literally nobody was dancing. Towards the end of the night when we had gotten wedding cake and sat down at one of the tables, Tanner randomly just looked at me and asked “Do you wanna dance?”. I melted a little bit and of course said yes. We were the only people on the dance floor and I know Tanner was embarrassed about it but he danced with me anyways. During that dance I realized that this was it. What we have is the kind of relationship I had always wanted.
The Proposal:
He was so sneaky! Seriously I had no idea it was coming. We were planning to wait until October to get engaged so he could meet my mom and talk to her about us. But, Tanner bought a ring, called and talked to my mom and step-dad and called and asked for my dad’s permission all in a couple of days. That same weekend I suggested that we drive up the Alpine loop on Sunday afternoon. We drove up the Provo canyon, parked the car, and found a trail with a gorgeous view of the beautiful, fall leaves. He pulled me close and started telling me how much he loved me, how glad he was that I was a part of his life and how, in that moment, he wanted me to be a part of his life for forever more than anything else. I started to think that this would be the perfect moment for him to propose but it was literally impossible. He asked if I was cold (I’m always cold) and started to reach for his jacket in his backpack. I looked over at him and he was on one knee, opening a little box with this gorgeous ring inside. I was so shocked that I laughed a bit and then obviously said “of course”.
5 things I love about him:
1) He is just a genuinely kind person!
2) He loves me for me and I have always been able to be myself around him.
3) He is athletic and likes to be outdoors (just like me!)
4) Tanner is hilarious. He can always make me laugh.
5) He’s hard-working, level headed, and independent but always has time for me and my random adventures and is also incredibly supportive.

He says:
How did you guys meet?
On the day before the 4th of July, I was playing FIFA with my roommate when these random girls came up to our window and invited us to go buy fireworks. We thought they were kinda weird, but we said that we would. That’s where I first got the chance to talk to Ali. She was in my ward, but I never had the chance to actually talk to her. After we hung out that day, my roommates and her roommates all became friends. We all did a lot of things together, and eventually I asked Ali out. The rest is history.
First thoughts about one another after you met?
Honestly, I thought she was way too pretty for me. I could tell that she went on a lot of dates with a lot of guys, and I didn’t want to be “just another guy” who asked her out. So Initially I didn’t want to ask her out, but after I got to know her from being in the same group of friends, I really started to like her.
Who said “I love you” first?
I did, duh.
Tell us about your first date:
So once our first date came around, we already knew each other pretty well. We actually were already acting like we were dating at that time. I had a softball game and Ali came to support us. Because I thought I didn’t play as well as I thought I could, I insisted that we go to the batting cages to show off my true skill. Once we did that (I got bad blisters), we went to Cafe Rio. It was a date on the spot.
Tell us about your first kiss:
We were chilling in my car after we did some things that night. She was showing me some of her favorite music. She was playing Love Someone by Jason Mraz. I thought it was a good idea, so I went for it.
How did you know he/she was the one?
I don’t think there was one time where I thought she was the one. It was just the whole process of dating her that convinced me that she is perfect for me. I never found anything that I didn’t like. She was always great to be around, and a very positive person.
How did he propose?
She thought I was going to wait to propose till her mom came out in the middle of October to come meet me. What she didn’t know is that her mom and I were messaging on facebook. We decided that it would be better if we got engaged earlier instead of waiting. So Ali’s roommates took her ring shopping one Saturday morning. Once she pointed out a few rings, the roommate secretly told the sales associate that I would be coming later that day to get a ring. I went after work (Ali thought I was late coming from work) and I picked up a good ring. The next day, we drove the Alpine Loop. We found a place to park and we hiked out a little ways till we got to a cool view. She looked away for a moment, so then I pulled out the ring and proposed. It was pretty awesome because she was super surprised.
