Christy & Joel: Engaged

[intro]We just adore Christy & Joel! We’re so excited for their wedding later this month. They shared their own love story with us. Read about how they met and be prepared to fall in love with this couple:[/intro]

He Says:
How did you guys meet?
I first saw her at church, and I thought she was someone I definitely wanted to “get to know”. She spoke to our congregation that day. I didn’t want to be one of those dudes who flocked up to her after she spoke, so I played it cool. As fate would have it, we happened to work in the same building at the time! Now I know she attends church and has a job….that’s when I first thought, “I can marry this girl!”. She was walking into the building as I was walking out and I said, “Hey I know you.” She looked at me like I was crazy. I told her she had spoken at church and I was in her congregation. I told her she did a great job. She said, “What did I talk about?”. I didn’t remember. I was focused on other things while she was speaking(like how pretty she was). It started with this experience, and was followed by months of me convincing her I was worth giving a chance.
First thoughts about one another after you met?
I couldn’t wait to take her on a date. I thought she was pretty, smart, and funny.
Who said “I love you” first?
OF COURSE ME!!! I wasn’t sure if she felt that way about me when I told her either. I was traveling a lot that last summer and I really missed her on one particular trip. I had never told any other girl that I loved them before her, but I knew that I was in love with Christy. I needed to let her know, but I was also super nervous.
Tell us about your first date:
We went to Boondocks Fun Center in Draper with some of my friends, and we ate Noodles and Company before we went. I have later learned that Christy hates Noodles and Company and is really bad at arcade games, and laser tag. It was a competition against the other people, so I was pretty disappointed with our performance. My favorite thing about this date was how well Christy took all the teasing I(and really everyone) gave her, and that I didn’t even know this was like her least favorite idea of a date because she had such a positive attitude. I will also be eternally grateful that she gave me another chance to take her out, even though she didn’t like our first date activities.
Tell us about your first kiss:
Well, I’m old fashioned so Christy had to kiss me first. She did a sneak attack kiss while we were camping(at the time, camping was my least favorite activity). I took me so off guard that I think I cheered right after.
How did he propose?
She will tell you(I also do this in person, so it only makes sense I would do it in an email).

She Says:

So I’m giving my own answers before I read Joel’s answers 🙂

How did you guys meet?
We met walking out of the building we both worked in.  He creeped me out by saying he knew me and then I found out he was in my single’s ward, I just hadn’t met him.  We started talking at work and church and he asked me out soon after!
First thoughts about one another after you met?
I thought Joel was really fun and cute and he might be a good match for one of my roommates or something 🙂
Who said I love you first?
Joel did!  But if he hadn’t said it that night I would have.  He had been gone a lot on work trips and was going to be leaving for 3 weeks.  I was really sad he was leaving again and  was hoping he’d say it before he left.
Tell us about your first date?
Our first date was a group date with him, his two roomies and their dates.  We went to Boondocks and played laser tag and arcade games.  I lost at EVERYTHING and it was supposed to be a competition between couples.  I wasn’t sure he want to take me out again after how badly I had made us lose.
Tell us about your first kiss?
It was my birthday and we were going up to the ward cam pout (since I was in charge of planning it and had to go.)  Joel hadn’t kissed me yet, but I could tell he wanted to and I hadn’t really given him the chance.  When we first got up to the camp out, we were alone for a quick moment and I just grabbed and kissed him.  Half for shock value and half because I wanted to prove the point that he needed to start kissing me!
How did he propose?
We work out together in the mornings before work.  We were on our way home from the gym and we were running particularly late that morning (because for some reason Joel had picked me up really late.)  I was worried because I was needing to be to work and was short on time and as we were driving home Joel didn’t turn on the street to get home.  I thought he was just not paying attention, so I said, “Joel you need to turn.”  He brushed it off and said something along the lines of he wasn’t paying attention and thought we could get home this other way.  I KNEW this other street didn’t go through and didn’t want to waste valuable time, so I told him that it didn’t go through and he needed to turn around.  He kept going and said let’s just see and I thought he was just being stubborn.  I was getting pretty annoyed by the time we got to the end of the dead end road, which was actually a park and an overlook of the Salt Lake valley.  There were all of these flowers set up and I still didn’t get it and thought they were for a memorial or something.  Joel parked and said we should go over to the flowers and I turned and gave him the look of death (still needing to get home and shower for work) and then I saw his face and it clicked!  I’m an idiot, the guys trying to propose!  I was caught so off guard and was so surprised I don’t remember much else.  Joel got down on one knee and I never even said yes I was so shocked.  I just cried and took the ring (which he thought was a good sign.)  After we got back in the car he said, “So does that mean yes?”
It was perfect!
